Academie La Saline
Gonaïves, Haiti
In 2011, on my first visit to Gonaïves, Haiti, I discovered my passion for elementary foreign language. The beautiful Caribbean Sea surrounded a country devastated by massive earthquakes. A high school teacher, I had hoped to serve a small school in one of Haiti’s poorest neighborhoods. Regrettably, I had no previous experience with elementary kids. I was fascinated when two young girls, Daphne and Sami, asked me (in French) to teach them Spanish.
I learned that world language education is more than pronouns and conjugations;
loving the child in front of me changes everything.
Haiti didn’t need me. I needed Haiti.
